Yum-o! has established a partnership with the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF), a nonprofit organization that serves as the educational arm of the National Restaurant Association and focuses on helping the restaurant and foodservice industry to recruit and retain a qualified and diverse workforce. As part our work together, in 2007, Yum-o! awarded five $2,000 scholarships to students participating in the NRAEF’s ProStart® program to support them as they as they continue their restaurant and/or foodservice studies. This spring, the 2008 scholarships will be available to any graduating high school senior planning to enroll in a post-secondary foodservice program. The deadline to apply is May 16, 2008, and interested students should visit the NRAEF’s website for more information and to apply.

Yum-o! recognizes the wide variety of food industry opportunities for young people making career choices today. By partnering with the NRAEF, Yum-o! is assisting this organization in attracting highly qualified, enthusiastic students for a careers in the foodservice industry and furthering our Fund program area, which includes funding cooking scholarships that ease the financial burden for young people pursuing their goal of working in this industry.

The 2007 scholarship recipients come from varied backgrounds, but share a common passion for the restaurant industry. The winning students were:

  • Steven Bookbinder – Weston, FL, The Culinary Institute of America
  • Shayla Ellis – Batavia, IL, Elgin Community College
  • Kenneth Holmes – Tumwater, WA, South Puget Sound Community College
