Rachael Celebrates Let’s Move’s 4th Anniversary with First Lady; Shares Proposed Updates to Nutrition Facts Labels

March 5, 2014  •

Rachael joined First Lady Michelle Obama and White House chef Sam Kass in the White House kitchen to celebrate the fourth anniversary of the Let’s Move! campaign, following the First Lady’s announcement of proposed updates to the Nutrition Facts label found on more than 700,000 food products.

"Our guiding principle here is very simple: that you as a parent and a consumer should be able to walk into your local grocery store, pick up an item off the shelf, and be able to tell whether it’s good for your family," said First Lady Michelle Obama. "So this is a big deal, and it’s going to make a big difference for families all across this country."

The Nutrition Facts label, introduced 20 years ago, helps consumers make informed food choices. If adopted, the proposed updates incorporate the latest scientific research, updated serving sizes and nutritional information (such as added sugars) and an updated design that is easier to read and understand. To kick things off with a naturally sweet recipe, White House chef Sam Kass whipped up a delicious Sweet Potato Soup with Granny Smith Apples and Honey as the First Lady and Rachael discussed the proposed updates  – you can find out all about their conversation in the kitchen, here!
